Navodaya Vidyalayas are the brain child of Mr. Rajivji Gandhi (Prime Minister at that time) and human resource minister P. V. Narasimha Rao (later he served as Prime Minister of India) to encourage and foster the rural talent in India.
These schools are often described as islands of excellence in the ocean of mediocre Indian educational system. Navodaya Vidyalayas offer free education to the students who are selected through an entrance test conducted all over India. Each district has one navodaya. There are 509 navodayas all over India. Surprisingly the students of navodaya vidyalayas outperform the much hyped kendriya vidyalayas in both class 10 and +2 examinations conducted by CBSE.
